How the Sentence Counter Works

WordCountNow's Sentence Counter analyses your text and counts every sentence, using punctuation markers (full stops, question marks, and exclamation marks) to identify sentence boundaries. It also calculates your average sentence length in words.

Why Sentence Length Matters

Average sentence length is one of the key drivers of readability. Short sentences are punchy and easy to follow. Long sentences can carry nuance but risk losing readers. The ideal average for most web content is 15–20 words per sentence.

Tips for Better Sentence Structure

• Mix short and long sentences for natural rhythm
• Break any sentence over 30 words into two
• Start sentences with strong subjects, not weak openers like "There is" or "It is"

How this counter counts

A sentence ends at a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark. That is the whole rule. No list of abbreviations is applied, so a full stop inside Dr. or inside 3.5 ends a sentence as far as this tool is concerned.

Two examples, so you know what to expect rather than being surprised by it:

• Dr. Smith arrived. counts as two sentences, not one.
• It cost 3.5 million. also counts as two.

If your text is full of titles, initials, decimals or abbreviations, the count will run high, and the average words per sentence will run low to match. Strip them out first if you need an exact figure. We would rather state the limitation than quietly hand you a number you cannot check.

Average words per sentence is your total word count divided by that sentence count, so the same caveat carries straight through to it.
