How Dialogue Is Counted
The tool counts every word inside straight double quotes ("...") and curly double quotes (“...”) as dialogue, then compares that total to your whole text's word count for a percentage. If an opening quotation mark is never closed, the result is flagged as unbalanced, since everything after it gets counted as dialogue too.
What to Do With Your Percentage
There's no universal target here — genre and style vary hugely. A dialogue-driven thriller and a description-heavy literary novel can both be doing exactly what they should. Use the percentage as a self-check against your own intentions, not a rule to hit.
A Note on Accuracy
Only straight ("...") and curly (“...”) double-quote pairs are recognised. Dialogue marked with single quotes ('...'), or deeply nested quotes within quotes, may not be counted correctly — always sanity-check the result against your own read of the text.
